Oliver discusses his early life, education, and work experiences at Bell Laboratories and Hewlett-Packard. He began his formal education at the California Institute of Technology and transferred to Stanford University to study electrical engineering with Frederick Terman. At Stanford he became associated with William Hewlett and David Packard. After graduating from Stanford in 1935, he did graduate work at the California Institute of Technology. In 1939 he joined Bell Laboratories. His initial assignment there was in the television research group under Alex Hansen. During World War II he worked at Bell on radar.
